题目:Carbon Nanomembranes Engineered from Molecular Monolayers
Physics of Supramolecular Systems of Surfaces, Bielefeld University, 33501 Bielefeld, Germany
Polymeric ultra-thin films are promising candidates to be used as components in miniaturized electronic, medical or energy devices. In this contribution, we report the fabrication of ultra-thin (~1 or 3 nm) carbon nanomembranes (CNMs). Organic biphenyl or nitro-biphenyl thiol moieties were formed in a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) on an Au (111) surface. The SAM was irradiated by electrons, leading to a two-dimensional cross-linked CNM through dehydrogenation and recombination mechanisms. After cross-linking, CNMs with an area of 1.2 cm² were detached from the gold surface and exhibited a free-standing ultra-thin film with a thickness of about 1 nm (length of the biphenyl molecule). Properties of CNM materials are analyzed, including thermal stability, electrical properties, optical properties, mechanical strength, chemical tunability, biocompatibility and various gas transport properties, such as hydrogen, helium, carbon dioxide, oxygen, nitrogen, argon, methane.
